Inspired by Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures, Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayón creates a harmonious composite of disparate sizes, shapes, colors and materials which elegantly come together in a cohesive design. Blue is a recurring color in Alexander Calder’s palette and work. For example, Baby Flat Top (1946). In 1930, Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and it set in motion his pursuit of wholly abstract composition in two and three dimensions. One would argue that Calder’s mobiles were influenced by Marcel Duchamp but one should not overlooked that Mondrian was one of the founders of the Dutch De Stijl movement and the stringent color options – Blue, Yellow and Red influenced Calder’s work. “Yellow is the movement of the ray (vertical) … Blue is the contrasting color to yellow (horizontal firmament)…” Hayón’s floating, biomorphic table top in Blue makes perfect sense.
